q&a with joanna

We had the privilege of chatting with Joanna about her life and business.

Q: What does a typical work day look like for you?

A:  I have a home studio but I treat it like going to work everyday.  I get up have a shower and get the kids off to school and then head into my studio.   My assistant Henny works from home also and comes a couple of days to pick up or return projects she has created and we go over stock and make sure we always have best sellers available tor rush orders. I spend about 3-4 days a week creating and designing and one day a week on updating website, shipping orders and planning new business.  I use my evening to sit down with a cup of tea and reply to all inquiries and to post new pictures and stories on social media.

Q: What led you to working in the wedding industry?

A: When I was in the film industry in Vancouver 18 years ago I started making everyday gemstone jewelry as a hobby to relieve the stress and it quickly became my passion.  After my second maternity leave 14 years ago I started my business full time supplying gemstone jewelry to numerous stores.  I had brides starting to approach me to custom design bridal jewelry and slowly expanded my business to include bridal retailers and custom bridal orders. Over the past 4 years I added hairpieces to my collection and now I have 17 boutiques I supply to across Canada as well as my first overseas stockist in Northern Ireland.

Q: Where do you get inspiration from?

A: Inspiration is everywhere, I find it is so many places!  I can think back to my very first influence it was when I went The Tower of London in England on a school field trip when i was about 9 (I was born in England) and I just remember being in awe of the Queens jewels.  That is such a vivid memory for me and surely influenced my classic vibe.

My inspiration also comes from the wedding gowns. My back necklaces which have been my best sellers for the past couple of seasons came about because of the trend for backless gowns and deep V back gowns.  Custom designs from brides are also a way to stretch my creativity, it really opens me up to other possibilities I am not have thought of previously.

When I walk my dog I really look at the shape plants and leaves which really inspire me for my hairvines and hair combs.  I actually pick the ones I love most and bring home with me.

Q: What jewellery did you wear on your wedding day?

A: My wedding was 16 years ago so and my designs were in their early days.  They were not too awful but for our vow renewals in a couple of years I will definitely be doing something different LOL

Q: What is your favourite rom-com?

A: My favourite romantic comedy is "Crazy Stupid Love" I adore Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell.

Q: What is your go-to Starbucks order?

A: Nothing complicated with my Starbucks order "Americano with room for cream and sugar".
